Apple Launches Emergency SOS via Satellite in Japan
Apple has officially rolled out its Emergency SOS via satellite service in Japan, enabling iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users to connect with emergency services even in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
Service Details
Starting today, this innovative feature is available on all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models. Users can now share their location via the Find My app when outside cellular and Wi-Fi range. This service is provided free for two years upon activation of a new iPhone 14 or iPhone 15.
Functionality
The Emergency SOS via satellite leverages custom-designed hardware and software to connect directly to satellites. In case of an emergency, users can quickly contact emergency services by pressing and holding the side button and a volume button until the emergency SOS slider appears. The interface will guide users to point their iPhone towards the right part of the sky to connect with a satellite.

- Location Sharing: Users can share their location with friends and family via satellite through the Find My app.
- Seamless Integration: Works alongside other safety features like Medical ID, emergency contacts, and location sharing in the Find My app.
Availability
The service is now available in Japan, alongside 16 other countries, including the US, UK, Germany, and Australia. To use this feature, users must have iOS 17.6 or later.
